LAST CONSERVATIVE STANDING
Has anyone noticed that liberals never express shame, never apologize, and never compromise? Their modus operandi is the constant chipping away at established institutions, this administration and journalistic vigilantism on American values. Am I the only who sees a pattern? Why, they even steal our representatives and presidential candidates.
I was a conservative before there was a President Ronald Regan. I was a Republican anomaly in 1980. In the 1980’s I was a poor, underemployed to unemployed, blue collar, single parent just trying to put food on the table during a major recession.
The regions major employer, Aluminum plants, had closed, businesses were shutting down and jobs were scare. I was barely scraping by but I didn’t blame the government. I had the same educational opportunities as everyone else. When I was young, I didn’t take full advantage of them. Otherwise, I could have been better positioned and insulated.
I was brought up in a Democratic household. We were always a strong union family. Right after high school I successfully campaigned for a Democratic Senator. I will never forget the pleasure of meeting the esteemed Speaker John McCormick in the Congressional men’s room. My first ballot was cast for Jimmy Carter primarily because he was peanut farmer. I didn’t leave the Democratic Party, it left me.
I’ve always had a strong moral compass. I never gave thought to the meanings of; conservative, liberal, republican, democrat, left, or right. I just knew right from wrong and where I saw the democrats heading, for me, was wrong.
The Republican’s warmly welcomed me into their tent. I could not detect any class distinction; they accepted me just as I was. I recall a Republican Central Precinct Committeeman meeting, in the early 1980’s, when the grand dame of our party leaned over to me and said…”we don’t want any of those people to get involved”. I didn’t know who she meant at the time, but it would turn out I was one of those people.
The mores with which I was reared in the 1950s and 1960’s remain unchanged. I am the same person that I was in 1960 or 1980’s. I am still a dues paying union member trying to make a living. My values define me. I have not changed, but the times and values have. Without my changing I have been ‘moved’ from center, to far right. In the 1980’s I would not have been labeled as “arch” conservative or “right winger” that would be the kindest way some would describe me today. I have remained steadfast while society has compromised taking republicanism and conservatism along with it.
It’s disappointing but not unexpected to see the conservative movement co-opted today moving toward left of center. We keep inviting the enemy into our tent by trying to be ‘all inclusive’ diluting our core values. It isn’t easy being conservative. It requires commitment and an unwavering faith in one’s belief. It’s a lot easier being liberal where everything is relative. Liberals far out number Conservatives, it’s amazing to me they have been able to accomplish anything.
Conservatives have been deluded to think they’ve been relevant. They’ve been tolerated. While Conservatives hold the “high” ground Liberals hold the strategic ground. Liberals control the media, and the educational system. They’re in control of the popular propaganda machine of Hollywood. There are more Liberals on the bench and in local political office than Conservatives. Liberals have always set the agenda. If they didn’t we wouldn’t see special laws and set asides for the morally challenged. We wouldn’t see consideration of amnesty for illegals, confiscation and redistribution of more private wealth, and stealing peoples’ homes to build shopping malls. There wouldn’t be the so called “hate crimes”, “gay” rights, “abortion” rights, and bans on prayer. Special rights for a few jeopardize rights for the majority and are dangerous for a society.
Liberals are patient. They may lose a battle, but they never lose a war. Gradually, like the frog in hot water, without fanfare, and while nobody notices they creep the culture to the left taking Conservatism along with it. I often hear Conservative talk show hosts using the term “homophobe” in the pejorative. When I grew up homophobia (a made up contrived word) was synonymous with straight or normal. We’d consider homosexuality as anything but gay. I avoid using that term along with anything else deemed politically correct. Today’s young, conservative, talk radio hosts accepts homosexuality as another normal alternative behavior. They’re young having grown up under the auspices of the NEA, and a product of a culture dominated by the left. They’ve been brainwashed throughout school and their young life to believe that way. That’s only one of several areas where we differ.
There is a loss of cultural shame today. There’s no shame for out of wedlock births, cohabitation, abortion or drug use. Normally, I say that Republicans are the only adults in the room but until John McCain makes his shift to the left official I have to hold off.
I’m only making observations not offering solutions. I feel compelled to point out what I have observed for years. Liberals have successfully orchestrated the Republican Party’s shift not only to where it was in 1980, but even further to the left. They continue to firmly hold the strategic ground while we continue to cede the ‘high’ ground. I am back to where I was in 1980 not a republican not a democrat just an orphaned conservative.
Republicans want to be culturally relevant I don’t see that happening. We eventually lose every substantive moral debate and important position through erosion. We’re so tactful we lose the attack. From day one the left was systematically trying to dismantle the Bush administration and hamper its effectiveness. At the conclusion of the post 911 honeymoon, the left (through their editorial and media snipers) were enormously successful in removing targeted key Bush personnel. Unless conservatives can position themselves better in the future, in main street media, entertainment, judiciary, the culture will continue its slippery decline.
I was wondering - has anyone else noticed?
